I think of web_view as a change of direction compared to the graphics
API proposal, rather than going further in the same direction, because
web_view does not involve the committee itself hashing out APIs, it
just leverages existing APIs standardized elsewhere.

Could you elaborate on why that is? Naively, I would think that this
proposal would just bring new users to the web platform (namely, users
of C++ applications which previously used other facilities for
rendering and interaction, and will now use web_view).

If this really is an existential threat to the web, then convincing
other browser implementers to oppose it would be a good first step. So
far, other browser implementers I've talked to seemed to be
indifferent to or supportive of this proposal.

There is a meeting planned in September for browser implementers to
discuss another C++ standardization topic (TLS support in the
Networking TS) in the Bay Area, with :ekr planning to attend from our
side. As you're in the area, you could consider attending, and taking
the opportunity to bring up this topic as well.

Papers outlining arguments against a proposal in written form are also
very helpful. I've tried my best to communicate the viewports made by
other Mozilla engineers in the previous dev-platform thread on
web_view, but a 90-second oral statement made by me to a subgroup of a
dozen people does not carry nearly as much weight as a written paper
that's in the record for every committe member for read and ruminate
on.

Thanks,
Botond
