I just did an experiment where I used Settings -> Displays -> Mirror, and both
screens displayed.
I then went back to Join and the 2nd went back to black.

I recreated this test 3 times, and each time I chose Mirror both screens
became visible in Mirror mode.
Each time I chose Join the 2nd screen went black.
The mouse cursor was still present, and moved between screens properly.

It can be hard to do this, as the "Keep these changes?" popup likes to appear
on the black screen.
It helps if you start 2 or 3 large terminals, and move them over to the black
screen before running settings, if that makes any sense.
