Yes, thank you, I compared the two screenshots, and yes, absolutely, the item "Devices" has never appeared on the left-hand menu, when the CD is inserted; nothing at all happens.
It baffles me, because the system or whatever does it, maybe the right word is driver (?) I don't really speak the language much yet, though I'm trying to learn, anyway the CD being inserted, now that I've installed Banshee, does show up as an item in the Banshee application, and everything now works, with Banshee, just as it used to work in Rhythmbox, before the upgrade. But it still doesn't phase Rhythmbox one iota. ;-) Why on earth that would happen is a mystery to me, which isn't saying much! I hope this is helpful, since if this is something others may have a problem with, it's worth figuring it out.
