Hello I'm left-handed too, I've been using for a year a Spanish Debian-based distribution called Guadalinex, based on Sid with a 2.4.23 kernel and I've been always able to switch correctly the buttons of the mouse, on a desktop-pc and on a Laptop (usb mouse + touchpad)
Recently I updated to a 2.6.6. debian kernel and it's now when I have the problems that you related. I'll try to contact Guadalinex mantainers to look for a solution to this insufferable bug. ¿could you post the names of the packages involved? Thank You.
