I felt that you wanted to explain the reason why xterm must not support multibyte encodings (because VT100 and so on doesn't support it). Am I right? Then, from the exactly same reason, you must remove features which VT100 and so on doesn't have and xterm has. Of course I don't agree such an explanation and I don't think you must remove such features.
