"GB" is the ISO country code for the country, whereas "UK" is the Internet topdomain. So I guess they need to be duplicated. Regarding the Swedish translation, "Storbritannien" (=Great Britain) is the most commonly used word, and if I were to use the translation for UK ("Förenade kungadömet"), that I find in official EU documents, nobody would know what country I refer to.
