A .xsession file allows you to take complete control over how your X
session works.  Everything that you want it to do, you just put it in
your .xsession file.

The advantage is that everything will work exactly as you configure it.

The disadvantage of this is that you have to know all of the things you
want your X session to do, and how to invoke each one correctly.  I don't
recommend it for new users.
