On the other hand, there are situations where ALSA works perfectly and just INSTALLING the pulseaudio package would break it, even if it was absolutely not used. You can see traces of that problem in the configuration snippets that pulseaudio drops in ALSA: @hooks [ { func pulse_load_if_running files [ "/usr/share/alsa/pulse-alsa.conf" ] errors false } ] pcm.!default { type pulse hint { show on description "Playback/recording through the PulseAudio sound server" } } The "pulse_load_if_running" guard was not always present.
