Oh, yeah. That is one disadvantage compared to the ready made NAS boxen: noise Ramon has 3x NMB 120x38mm fans in the Norco for proper cooling of 20 drives + electronics. They are a wee bit loud for home use if you don't damp the enclosure with foam. The SuperMicro 2U I noted for Sam will also be loud. Any 2U/3U with hot swap bays will be loud. The fans must generate high static pressure to pull air through the drive cages and through the small airflow gaps in the SAS backplane PCB. High pressure = high noise. There's no free lunch here.
