Thanks to everyone. I was able to resolve this snag I did finally get an
open view of the shell in kde and reconfigured-whew! Debian is great!! I
just sometimes don't have the patience and knowledge to administer it. 
(writing down ctrl-alt-F1) I thought I hit every key combination ;)
