It seems to me that this explains why X won't kick into 1024x768 mode (it thinks the monitor can't handle it). 1. Do you have a file /etc/X11/xorg.conf? If so, please could you paste the "Monitor" sections that include any reference to "HorizSync" or "VertRefresh". (Better still, pastebin the entire file.) For example, mine has a section that looks like this: Section "Monitor" Identifier "DELL 2007FP" VendorName "Unknown" ModelName "DELL 2007FP" HorizSync 30.0 - 83.0 VertRefresh 56.0 - 76.0 EndSection 2. For your monitor, can you please identify the Horizontal Sync frequency range that it can support (this will be in the booklet, or you can try searching for it online).
