My bad. In squeeze it is called gdm3:

Uh? :-?
Well... you have to understand what we are trying to get with that. The
goal is to kill the X server (your X session) in order you can run "Xorg -
configure" command.
If killing gdm3 does not work, you can try by calling "init 1" ("init 1"
is single-user mode with no graphical server) and run the command from
there.
So jump to a tty (Ctrl+Alt+F1), login as root and run:
init 1
Re-type root's password to get into maintenance console and follow the
last steps:
cd /etc/X11/
Xorg -configure
Well the short of it..it ends in .. ABORT.
Any suggestions for maybe a new card that is supported by squeeze?
Or a card that is more compatible with linux distros?
Now say I do replace the card.
How will debian handle it and maybe the other distros that I have on
external disks without reinstalling.
Suse11.3, Ubuntu 10.10.
Thanks
If something goes wrong (or you feel in panic :-P), you can always return
back to your "safe place" by:
su - youruser
startx
