It looks like you don't have permissions to access the /dev/dsp device. A 'ls -al /dev/dsp' or 'ls -al /dev/dsp0' will list pertinent information. You usually have to be part of the 'audio' group. A nice music player, I think, is 'xmms.' Videos/DVDs work well with 'xine' and the appropriate plugin, i.e. dvdnav etc..
