As Colin and Craig said, the limit for an 'mbox' folder (the single
file) is probably 2GB for you (any 32-bit system without some tweaking
and magic). If you switch to maildir the limit will be your disk
space or inode count (depending on which runs out first). You'll also
get better performance opening the folder with maildir. The reason is
that mutt will only need to read the beginning of each file to get the
headers and can completely skip the data. Loading the folder (with
about 2100 messages right now) is a bit slow the first time, but after
that the cache makes it really fly!
