I didn't catch the beginning of this thread, so excuse me if this has already been discussed. I had this same or a "very similar" problem on my system. The cause of it was the framebuffer as I remember. If I would start computer and boot straight into xdm, then kill xdm from within another console I would be left with the screen that looked like you describe. I just took off framebuffer line in the lilo. Just my 2 cents. Alex.
