Sounds like a bad graphics card and/or configuration.
What's your hardware? Probably want to post your XF86Config file
(appropriate version if you're running XF86v4), might look through your
X server logs as well.
I've included my XF86Config below. This is happening for me and for a
friend of mine, and we both have different video cards and monitors. It
started for both of us about 3-4 weeks ago. It probably started after
an upgrade of the X packages because neither of us have changed our
hardware or XF86Config recently. I have an ATI Rage 128 Pro II AGP with
a 19" Mitsubishi Diamondtron monitor.
