Did you try to install cdcd ?  Or try running xmms from an x-term to
see if there is any error message?  I think that /dev/cdrom should be a
sym link to /dev/hdc and should have matching permissions and you will
have to make it belong to the disk group too.  Here is mine:

slamson@callerio:~$ l /dev/cdrom /dev/scd0
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     cdrom           9 Oct 15 02:40 /dev/cdrom ->
/dev/scd0
brw-rw----    2 root     cdrom     11,   0 Oct 11 01:20 /dev/scd0

(I use scsi emulation for cdrw that is why it is scd0, not hdc)

other than that, I'm sorry I don't know what else to tell you.  I would
really try a simple cdplayer like cdplay or cdcd to see what they say
about the situation when you run them.
