This is IMHO an excellent example how it could be done.

In the kernel hierachy you might enter:
 'make config'
 'make menuconfig'
 'make xconfig'

Every time you get a folding editor like choice. You might use plain tty,
ncurses or even tcl/tk. All these mathods are based on the same data, so
that driver developers may provide a single file with the help info etc.

I do think you know how it is working...

Yes, a very good point. I am offering a host for a mailing list.
We should first figure out how it should work and implement it
afterwards. There is definetelly a need for a improved dselect.

Actually why is the maintainer so silent?

Is dselect still maintained?
