From X, hit Ctrl+Alt+F1 to switch to the first text console.  From a
text console, use Alt+F? (where ? represents a number in [1..6]) to
switch to the other text consoles.  (You can also use e.g. Ctrl+Alt+F3
to get to the third text console from X.)

This won't change how your system boots, but will allow you to get work
done while your X config is hosed.
