When you boot up, it goes to X. Try pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 (with the Ctrl and Alt being the left ones) to get to a console. KDE is not just a window manager. KDE stands for K Desktop Environment, and, like gnome, a number of packages depend upon its libraries, and are desined for use with it.
