Yes, Qian is right I think. You can, if you wish, install grub in the first sector of a linux filesystem partition. One thing you can then do is dd the first sector into a file, copy it over to Windows and add it to your win2k boot menu (boot.ini) and have Linux be a boot option in the Windows boot menu. That's an appealing option for putting Linux on a computer that's mostly used by someone who's uncomfortable with anything but Windows.
(I think you can also install grub into a regular 512-byte file this way, instead of using dd.) But it doesn't work to install grub into the first sector of the windows partition. That wipes out the windows boot loader. You want to install grub to the first sector of the whole hard drive, not the first sector of the first partition. The first sector of the hard drive comes before any of the partitions. You can also boot off your Win2k installation CD and choose the repair option.
