I suspect this is an environment issue on the buildd, my manual binNMU of pdl on i386 succeeded without this test failure. It also used DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS="parallel=4" like the buildd which could have been a cause, the autotools test-driver for the spatialite package fails when parallel builds are enabled for example.
