Perhaps you remember history differently than I do -- as I recall, when it was in the old source format (bo and before), there was a gopher-client and a gopherd package, built from the gopher source code. ie the server was indeed packaged. When I worked on it for hamm, I basically packaged it from scratch (the old source format was ugly). I had intended to go back and get it to build the gopherd package at a later date, but I haven't yet.
