I believe the problem Santiago brings up is that dpkg will become confused by files appearing in both /usr/doc/package and /usr/share/doc/package, through the symlink. If this is the case, can we amend the proposal to symlink /usr/doc/package_FHS -> /usr/share/doc/package ? (The exact name is of course up for discussion.) This should avoid that problem, and the symlink in /usr/doc should be easy enough to find. I admit that I am not a dpkg expert; I have probably misunderstood the problem, as the solution seems too simple not to have been found previously.
