The rationale behind this is that there might be people (now ... or in the future who seeked the mailing list archive) who are interested in the discussion. It is simply a waste of time to talk about the very same things in private mails and it is simply unfair to hide potentially valuable information from others. My first reaction would be to simply wait because any server in debian.org domain is observed by DSA (Debian Server Admin) team and they usually take action if needed. My guess is that this is just a temporary problem. If nothing has changed we should ask DSA.
