I have already the newest kernel and have always used the latest versions.
I can't check what version it was that was working well.  I have had to do a
whole reinstall several times.  But it was a 2.6.2x kernel.  The hibernation
seems to be as fast as it was though I didn't do anything special.  The
noise might be coming from the network adapter.  I can say that the laptop
does seem to make such noise while working under Windows and when it is on
battery power.  So it might be also the processor.

I am sorry, I do not know what the tea kettle is.
