I have already the newest kernel and have always used the latest versions. I can't check what version it was that was working well. I have had to do a whole reinstall several times. But it was a 2.6.2x kernel. The hibernation seems to be as fast as it was though I didn't do anything special. The noise might be coming from the network adapter. I can say that the laptop does seem to make such noise while working under Windows and when it is on battery power. So it might be also the processor.
I am sorry, I do not know what the tea kettle is.
