Hi, I'm going to install debian linux to my ASUS A6R notebook, and this is my first time to install Linux on a notebook. Which should I prefer, Woody ar Sarge?
Forget about woody, the installer of the newer versions of Debian is much better. Moreover, for a laptop I would recommend at least Etch ("testing") and I think Sid ("unstable") is even better. Don't let the name scare you off: "Unstable" just means: "not suitable for a mission- critical server". The packages in Sid are changing a lot; while this is not good for a server, it is much better for a laptop to get all the modern features (suspend-to-ram, CPU frequency scaling to save batteries, etc.) working. If you are not comfortable enough with Linux to go for Sid, then Etch might be a good compromise for you.
I was try installing Woody, but the X windows always crash, and there is always error message saying that my / system have error so my system always run a check and it never reach the login prompt. I try several times and it always repeated like that. I haven't try to install sarge, I hope it won't give any problems such as problems arises when I install woody. Anybody wants to share opinion?
Normally I would recommend to use the Etch installer and then upgrade to Sid (if desired). You can also use the Sarge installer to get a basic system running (without X) and then upgrade to Etch or Sid and install the more modern version of X (Xorg) which these two have. Your mail suggests that you have some experience with Linux on desktops or servers already, so this might be the best way for you.
Is there anybody who can help me so I can run my notebook with debian, please tell me what should I do?
Another handy website is http://kmuto.jp/debian/hcl/ You can paste the output of "lspci -n" into a webform and it will tell you if your hardware is supported and what the correct driver is called.
