Hi: Just a small note, for the record, while I agree the package can not depend or recommend, maybe it should suggest, as people will need the firwmare more and more, as time passes.
Currently it is needed for using (as in really be able to use and not just launch be means of the software Mesa fallback) 3D apps like Blender, 3D game like Torcs or even some window managers like Compiz, and I do not think the trend is going to change, some 2D looking games are implemented via 3D and the same for window managers. Also, by looking at shipped files inside firmware-linux, it also affects other things like ethernet cards, not just 3D. So hinting via suggest should not hurt. Thanks.
