It appears that the fix applied to qt5base-opensource-src 5.5.1+dfsg-8 in relation to the bug: https://bugreports.qt.io/browse/QTBUG-46323 has improved things.
The new gcc-5 libraries seemed to have caused problems also. Both iceweasel and chromium locking up today. Arthur.
