For the second time I'm seeing this bug:

some upgrade in the last few days did it, my local Debian mirror wasn't
updating and when I switched to an alternative had over 100 packages to
update.
The problem could be related to using a Radeon3200HD onboard graphics
chip / vdpau.
I'll try removing vdpau libraries and downgrading likely libraries and
am open to other suggesitons to try to isolate the cause.
The only error I get in dmesg is:
