As far as I know it's a bug in xorg. Check this new nvidia driver:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_190.32.html It's Beta and not many cards are listed, but try it anyway. I'm using it with a Geforce Go 7300 which isn't supported by this beta release, but it works and didn't crash since I switched.
