Nothing is "basic" in a modern computer.

The chipset is very important to get ATAPI commands through.

What exactly is the issue is yet to be investigated, I'd *love* to see
somebody actually have a look at why -M q35 is needed, rather than
having to "document" in all places this workaround.

(the workaround is not needed for i386 images. Worse, -M q35 makes the
i386 in-kernel driver choke, again investigation welcome)
