I downloaded debian-sid-hurd-amd64-NETINST-1.iso,

But the installer then tells me "Your installation media couldn't be
mounted. When installing from CD-ROM, this probably means that the disk was
not in the drive. If so you can insert it and try again."
Immediately before, I briefly see a message "/hurd/iso9660fs: Could not find
valid superblock".
Have you checked the md5 of the file, to make sure you didn't get
corruption?
I had not, also didn't see a md5sum

Ah, sorry, missed adding them.
BTW, you don't seem to be using the -enable-kvm option? You really want
it.
I've tried now with -smp2 -enable-kvm. Much faster. Thanks. I now get to
the installation media mount issue much quicker. This time I used:
* Text install
* Language: English
* Location: Ireland
* Keyboard: German
Still get the same issue.
I've also tried the pseudo-graphical install choosing Germany/German.
Same issue there. And just going with the default for everything
(pseudo-graphical install, English, US). Same problem.
By contrast, the Debian GNU/Linux x86 bookworm installer, and the
OpenBSD 7.8 installer work fine for when I use them in qemu.
