With a proper legal opinion, we will be in a much better position to evaluate changes to these processes.

SPI has relationships with some great IP lawyers specializing in F/LOSS licenses and community-run projects, and they charge us very reasonable rates. All it takes is a clear list of questions and authorization from Debian leadership for us to engage with counsel to get answers. Turn-around time is typically somewhere between a week and a month depending on their availability, and whether the specific questions necessitate a referral to other colleagues with slightly different specializations.
