It should work, but perhaps what you are experiencing is that by defaultpandoc expects a blank line between changes of blockquote level: https://pandoc.org/MANUAL.html#extension-blank_before_blockquoteMaybe this works: pandoc -f markdown-blank_before_blockquote -t plain
