OTOH 45s seems quite slow. Bernhard, do you have zstd installed and
initramfs-tools configured to use it?
On my laptop 3 kernels are installed and on initramfs update round ~10s:

Yes I do, and according to file initramfs is using it. But as I said, this system is realllly slow. It's a 2 vCPU VM on a host with a Xeon E5-2650 v3.

But still, even on my desktop, update-initramfs takes ~10s per kernel. It doesn't even look like it's compressing, even though zstd is installed.
