Hello Aaron and everybody, the R package ecosystem uses control fields inspired by ours. But there the Suggests field is used in a stronger way: packages listed in Suggests usually provide functionality that is directly leveraged by packaged code, and the usual pattern is that if the suggested package is not installed, there is error catching that leads to a less prefered alternative or to a message with guidance about installing the suggested package.
In Debian, if I remember well, I have seen that kind of behaviour with Inkskape opening a pop-up requesting the installation of extra python packages when trying to use some filters. The Suggests field in Debian is not very useful at the moment, but there is a straightforward way to repurpose it. And apt-get already has an --install-suggests option.
