Just for the record: Are you using a Debian supplied kernel or a self
built one? (In the latter case is there a chance, you'll try the
Debian one as well?)

Personally I don't think this is a problem, as Debian does not support
2.4 for quite some time already. Personally the last 2.4 system known
to me upgraded about 3 weeks ago, and this was a server.
