I think 5.38 will parse '-R'. But please note that this is not a
command-line 'option'. It is a 'Directive' which goes into the
configuration file 'smartd.conf'. Is this where you are putting it?

There is no 5.39 relese.
All I know is that the one I installed with SuSE 11.0 on my desk top is:
$ smartd --version
smartd 5.39 2008-05-08 21:56 [x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu] (local build)
Copyright (C) 2002-8 by Bruce Allen, http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net
Also, the version that announces itself as 5.38 does *not* parse -R.
My primary concern, of course, is that the completely up-to-date "etch"
variation be able to report temperature correctly. :)
