Hi, Thanks for investigating this. Now when I see that this is purely an upstream regression and only a patch in Debian, I suggest you submit this first and foremost upstream and mark the Debian bug Forwarded.
Upstream github.com/codership/galera is very responsive to PRs and you have here good research to prove it is a clear regression.
