Hi,

I reassigned this bug to sudo since I noticed that

sudo apt-get install foo

seems to fail also for other packages than 'ess'. One example is "sudo
apt-get install sbcl" which fails because HOME is not set. Do you
think this is
1) a bug in sudo default configuration
2) a bug in the packages that won't install without HOME or SHELL
or 3) not a bug at all and "sudo apt-get install foo" is not supposed to work?

Or perhaps 4) sudo should warn/ask about this at install/upgrade time?

best regards,
Timo Lindfors
