For the information of whoever's investigating this bug, this is probably because Mark chose the desktop environment task, which ropes in x-window-system (including xdm) and a bunch of GNOME/KDE packages (including gdm, or so I figure.)
Maybe tasksel should be tweaked to only install one? (hint: gdm is pretty)
