Those docs are totally outdated. They were essentially correct up until 1.2.2 I believe (when the whole build.sh hack was replaced by autoconf)

You should go for dbmail-2.0rc8 instead.

It is well (or at least much better) documented
It has startup scripts for most major distros
It has best-practice installation docs for the main MTA's
Its generally faster and has several additional features (such as ACL support).
You will save yourself the hassle of upgrading from 1.2.x to 2.x
