I'm working along those lines, allowing DBMail to read users out of the Active Directory. Code has already been posted to the list a few months ago :-) Right now, I'm working on support for forwarding contacts.
If you're not in the mood to completely replace exchange, though, I'd be interested in hearing how you see the emails flowing... perhaps my code could be extended to support it from the DBMail side, or perhaps we're looking more at an Exchange configuration issue.
