It has just occurred to me: have you tried disabling OpenCL before importing photos? A bad graphics driver could cause the issue you experience (processing hanging indefinitely). It can be toggled in settings, see here: https://darktable.gitlab.io/doc/es/cpugpumemory.html So, again, start with a clean profile so no photos are in the DB and no processing occurs; disable OpenCL; try importing. If it works, we'll know it's your graphics driver that's causing the problem.
