Basically it was decided that depending on just fonts-roboto is the
right thing to do. In oldstable Debian it's the only package that exists
and it contains the actual fonts, in other Debians it's a meta-package
that depends on actual package (-hinted in stable, -unhinted in
newer). Looks like that in testing and unstable -hinted package is
dummy and doesn't contain anything. So your original request to depend
on all variants makes sense only for stable, but you mention Debian
Next, which I assume is testing. I'm not sure what's this whole mess
with -hinted and -unhinted is all about, but anyway it doesn't look
like packagers should care about it, fonts-roboto is the right thing to
depend on.

As for requires vs recommends dependency there was a disagreement.
pmjdebruijn chose "recommends" for his Ubuntu packages, darix on the
other hand thinks that "requires" is the right thing to do. I don't
think we managed to convince him otherwise, it's his decision in the
end after all.
