Well, just as expected conversation goes far beyond original topic )))

1. Can we just change dependencies in deb file like this:
fonts-roboto → fonts-roboto|fonts-roboto-hinted|fonts-roboto-unhinted
?

2. Moving fonts to "recommends" instead of "depends" probably is a good
idea too. This what nearly all other packages do. E.g. libreoffice 
packages with long list of recommended fonts. It is good to respect
those who uses "--no-install-recommends" option.
