Imagine every program packing the fonts it likes, each of them in the
version the developer found the time to include. Should the fonts
also be maintained in the darktable source repository?

Packages tend to specify their dependencies, rather than including
them. If darktable now requires a special font, add that as a
dependency. If depending on a non-standard font seems unfortunate,
then maybe it is.

Does darktable *depend* on the elegant theme? Or is it optional? If
it's optional, the whole theme should be packaged separately, having
roboto as a required dpendency. That would remove the dependency on
roboto from darktable, and also reflect the true requirements.
