Hello Marco,

After I modified the permissions I decided to re-run the setup and install of X11.  That did work without any errors.  However, I am still getting the same problem: "winMultiWindowXMsgProc - Fatal error 1 on xcb connection" when I run startxwin.  This was on a fresh invocation of cygwin.

Attached to this email, please find three files:

  * /var/log/xwin/XWin.0.log

  * ~/startxwin.log

  * ~/cygcheck.out

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Regards,
Charlie P.

Hello folks,

I have had multiple problems trying to install X11 on Cygwin. I am running Cygwin on Windows 11 on my Asus VivoBook.

The initial X11 installation showed Error 3 for the sub-installation of xinit.

It should be related to the items on the start menu.
Unlikely related to your issue.

Looking through previous answers, I found a suggestion to run the following:

  CYGWINFORALL=-A /bin/sh -vx /etc/postinstall/xinit.sh   (**)

This failed with the following error:

    mkshortcut: Saving "/cygdrive/c/ProgramData/Microsoft/Windows/Start
    Menu/Programs/Cygwin-X/User .xsession script.lnk" failed; does the
    target directory exist?

Later, after quite a bit of rigamarole involving "takeown" and "icacls", I was able to run (**) without any error message.

So then I tried startxwin, with the following error:

    winMultiWindowXMsgProc - Fatal error 1 on xcb connection

Here is the complete output of startxwin:

========================================================================
Welcome to the XWin X Server
...
winMultiWindowXMsgProc - xcb_connect() returned and successfully opened the display.
Using Composite redirection
xinit: connection to X server lost

waiting for X server to shut down winClipboardProc - winClipboardFlushWindowsMessageQueue trapped WM_QUIT message, exiting main loop.
winMultiWindowXMsgProc - Fatal error 1 on xcb connection
winDeinitMultiWindowWM - Noting shutdown in progress
(II) Server terminated successfully (0). Closing log file.
==================================================================================

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.  If I seem clueless, that's pretty much how I feel right now -- sorry!

I have not seen anything obvious.
It looks like that program reached its end and exit.

Are you trying to use some Window Manager ?
Any .startxwinrc on you $HOME diretory ?
If you run directly XWin , what's happen ?

Jon, the X package maintainer, probably will have better debugging ideas.

One thing I noticed is that you installed almost all available packages.

$ grep "OK$" cygcheck.out | wc -l
7554

Any reason for that ?
https://cygwin.com/faq.html#faq.setup.everything

The golden rule should be "install only what you need";
the system will be lighter as space and responsivness and there are less risk of something going wrong.

Just to give you a reference I have only 2632 packages installed and I am one of the main packagers as number of packages to take care of.

Regards
Marco
