Hello folks,

I have had multiple problems trying to install X11 on Cygwin.   I am running Cygwin on Windows 11 on my Asus VivoBook.

The initial X11 installation showed Error 3 for the sub-installation of xinit.

Looking through previous answers, I found a suggestion to run the following:

  CYGWINFORALL=-A /bin/sh -vx /etc/postinstall/xinit.sh   (**)

This failed with the following error:

    mkshortcut: Saving "/cygdrive/c/ProgramData/Microsoft/Windows/Start
    Menu/Programs/Cygwin-X/User .xsession script.lnk" failed; does the
    target directory exist?

Later, after quite a bit of rigamarole involving "takeown" and "icacls", I was able to run (**) without any error message.

So then I tried startxwin, with the following error:

    winMultiWindowXMsgProc - Fatal error 1 on xcb connection

Here is the complete output of startxwin:

========================================================================
Welcome to the XWin X Server
...
winMultiWindowXMsgProc - xcb_connect() returned and successfully opened the display.
Using Composite redirection
xinit: connection to X server lost

waiting for X server to shut down winClipboardProc - winClipboardFlushWindowsMessageQueue trapped WM_QUIT message, exiting main loop.
winMultiWindowXMsgProc - Fatal error 1 on xcb connection
winDeinitMultiWindowWM - Noting shutdown in progress
(II) Server terminated successfully (0). Closing log file.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.  If I seem clueless, that's pretty much how I feel right now -- sorry!

Sincerely,
Charlie P.
